Presentation in Granada about Feminine Nouns

Jurica Polančec, PhD, a member of the project team, participated in the sixth international conference GranaSlavic, held in Granada, Spain from 2 to 5 June 2025. On June 2nd, he presented a paper entitled Development of the Feminine i-stems from Old Church Slavonic to Croatian Church Slavonic, in which he reported on the research on feminine i-stem nouns in Croatian Church Slavonic in comparison with Old Church Slavonic.

The research is based on the materials for the Dictionary of the Croatian Church Slavonic language and on two Old Church Slavonic dictionaries (Staroslavjanskij slovar’, Slovník jazyka staroslověnského). The aim of the research was to determine the list of feminine i-stem nouns in Croatian Church Slavonic, compare it with the list in Old Church Slavonic, and describe and explain the differences between the two lists.

It was shown that the lists of feminine i-stem nouns are largely identical between the two languages, but that in Croatian Church Slavonic we find a large number of new nouns, of which by far the largest number are nouns derived with the suffix -ostь. The new nouns often, but not always, belong to the Old Chakavian linguistic layer. Of the other differences between the two languages, particularly interesting are the cases in which the same noun in the two languages shows differences in declension patterns.
