Presentation in Rijeka about female names

Ana Mihaljević, PhD, a member of the project team, participated in the international conference Riječki filološki dani (Rijeka Philological Days), which took place in Rijeka from April 10 to 12, 2025. She gave the presentation Female Names in the Missals and Breviaries of Beram – An Onomastic Analysis, in which she presented research on Croatian Glagolitic female names found in two missals and two breviaries from Beram.

This research was based on the data from the database beram.stin.hr, created as part of the work of the Center of Excellence for Croatian Glagolitism. The aim was to explore the corpus of female names, analyze the representation of female names within the overall anthroponymy, examine the ways in which names were adapted from Latin and Greek, identify the persons to whom the names refer, and compare the results with the Slovník jazyka staroslověnského as well as with the contemporary state based on the personal names portal.

The research showed that various phonological changes occurred during the adaptation process, and different variants of individual names were identified. A certain number of indeclinable names were also noted, as the names appearing in Croatian Glagolitic books often remain indeclinable even in Latin. Additionally, some nouns were found to vary in their declension patterns. The presentation also highlighted several challenges in processing and analyzing the names.

One of the themes of Riječki filološki dani was dedicated specifically to women, making the topic of this project and presentation a fitting contribution to the overall theme of the conference.
