Dr. Ana Mihaljević, a member of the project team, participated in the final scientific conference of the Croatian Science Foundation (HRZZ) project Pre-modern Croatian Literature in European Culture: Contacts and Transfers, entitled The Works of Petar Kanavelić (1637–1719) and Ignjat Đurđević (1675–1737): Contacts and Transfers. The conference took place at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences of the University of Zagreb on May 8 and 9, 2025.

With her colleague, assistant professor Dr. Petra Matović, Ana Mihaljević gave a lecture entitled Đurđević’s Latin translation of the Sighs of Mary Magdalene the Penitent, in which they presented the results of their analysis of this Latin text and placed it in the context of other Croatian texts about Mary Magdalene – probably the most fascinating saint in literary history, whose character was created by the fusion of several saints.

Particular attention was paid to Croatian Glagolitic texts about Mary Magdalene – especially the legends found in the Ivančić and Žgombić miscellanies – as the literature often cites Nikola Nalješković (Dubrovnik, c. 1500 – Dubrovnik, 1587) as the first Croatian author to speak about this saint, while the existence of Glagolitic texts dedicated to her is overlooked.

The project Pre-modern Croatian Literature in European Culture: Contacts and Transfers, within the framework of which this conference was organized, consisted of several segments. One of these segments was entitled The Image of Women and Women Authors: Transfers of Adaptation into the Supposed Literary Culture. The project leader is also a member of our project team – Associate Professor Dr. Dolores Grmača, who will within our project focus specifically on Mary Magdalene.
