From May 11 to 17, 2025, project team member Assoc. Prof. Saša Potočnjak (University of Rijeka, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences) was in Vatican City (Vatican) and Rome (Italy), where she researched Glagolitic manuscripts housed in the Vatican Apostolic Library (Biblioteca Apostolica Vaticana) and archival documents stored in the Vatican Apostolic Archive (Archivio Apostolico Vaticano).
In the Vatican Library, the research focused on Glagolitic codices that are not available in digital form and contain hagiographic readings featuring representations of virgin martyrs. Some of the manuscripts studied in the same library belong to confessional Glagolitic literature, which provides instructions on how to confess women, distinguishing between women’s sins based on their social and marital status, as well as their age.
In the Vatican Secret Archives, several documents related to the dioceses of the northern Adriatic region, including those concerning women’s monasteries, are preserved. Given the project’s theme, the researcher specifically investigated visitations, which allow for the reconstruction of Glagolitic written culture and its reception.
She also visited the Croatian Church of St. Jerome in Rome and the Church of St. Marcellus (Chiesa di San Marcello al Corso), where she examined epigraphs and collected data that will support the continuation of research into the use of Glagolitic script in the Northern Adriatic dioceses during the 17th century.
