Presentation on Female Names in Chile

Project team members Dr. Ana Mihaljević and Dajana Ćosić participated in the 27th International Conference on Historical Linguistics – ICHL 27, held from August 18 to 22, 2025, at the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile and Universidad Adolfo Ibáñez in Santiago de Chile.

This major historical linguistics conference was held for the first time in South America this year. It brings together historical linguists and specialists in related fields to present their research in areas such as methods and practices of linguistic reconstruction, formal and functional approaches to language change, historical sociolinguistics, computational approaches to historical linguistics, contact and areal linguistics, interfaces between historical linguistics and other disciplines, and many other related areas.

In their presentation Women in the Croatian Glagolitic texts – onomastic analysis of female names, the project team members presented the results of their research on female personal names in the Croatian Church Slavonic language, based on the corpus of the Beram missals and breviaries, as well as corpus used for the compilation of the Dictionary of the Croatian Redaction of Church Slavonic.

Special attention was given to the adaptation of names into Croatian Church Slavonic, as well as to Greek and Latin influences. The results were compared with the situation in Old Church Slavonic, based on available lexicographic material, and with contemporary Croatian, using the personal names portal http://osobno-ime.hr.
