Presentation on feminine i-declension nouns in Mali Lošinj

FEMIGLA project member Dr. Jurica Polančec presented his paper at the 11th Skok’s Etymological and Onomastic Meeting (Croatian: 11. Skokovi etimološko-onomastički susreti), held in Mali Lošinj from October 16 to 18, 2026. This central Croatian conference dedicated to etymology and onomastics takes place every four years and is named after the distinguished Croatian etymologist and onomastician Petar Skok (1881–1956).

In his presentation, New i-Declension Nouns in Croatian Church Slavonic, Dr. Polančec discussed feminine i-stems not attested in Old Church Slavonic. He also addressed nouns of the same type that do appear in Old Church Slavonic but are not attested there as i-stems, appearing instead exclusively as a-stems or, less frequently, as o-stems. In addition to providing a list of such nouns, the presentation also addressed the origin of these new i-stems, which were largely identified as being of vernacular origin.
